Kinja'd!!!

I have had this question for quite some time now and couldn't find the answer anywhere. But then I came here and noticed that you guys on oppo seem to know a fair amount more about my old Saab than I do.

So for my first post to the site I wanted to see if you guys could help me out, so here it goes.

About 2 years ago my Saab had a bit of an issue when the timing chain wore the tensioner down and the chain slipped, suffice it to say that I had a now useless engine. After we took it to a mechanic that said he would replace the engine, the car worked (for about 2 weeks ). One day driving home the car started accelerating wildly and shot the turbo to the limiter and shut the car off.

After we had someone else look at it they found out he put the wrong engine in the car and nothing matched up correctly. This little issue, as the original mechanic put it, has probably cost my poor little car it's freakin life.

Now my question to you guys: Is there any way that I can transplant an old Saab engine preferably pre-GM era, into the Saab, and how much would that cost?

Or should I sell it as a parts car to someone who needs the parts for their car?

Any help, even the slightest tip would be appreciated.

The above photo is not mine it is from the website ccstechgroup.com but I have the same exact car as the one pictured.

this is your car and yours is a first gen, correct? Some of the engines are "SAAB" engines, others are not. In theory, any of the ones listed *can* work but you might need different sensors and suspension bits to get it all to work. I recommend using your car's VIN and a saab VIN decoder to figure out what engine code was originally in it and just replace it with that if you want to keep it.

All I know for the time being is that it is a 2002 I'll have to go check the vin tomorrow. Sadly never thought about that. Thanks for the advice.

It's the easiest way to find out what came with your car from the factory and what your car is setup for. Some engines have different cooling or vacuum setups that won't let them be dropped in as-is. This is a piece of advice to remember with ALL cars. So it's good to learn how to read and decode a VIN now :)

You should sell your 9-3 and buy a classic 900 because those are way cooler ;)

Seriously though check out some Saab forums, I bet they'll have info on common engine swaps you can do, and maybe even some build threads. Or if you can't find the info searching just try posting your question on a Saab specific forum.

Yeah I wish I could find a nice saab 900 around my area but they are either extremely rare or their owners never want to give the up. They are pretty amazing though.
